Diagonal Mar Park

One of Barcelona’s most modern parks

Hola Barcelona, your travel solution

An immense, sun-filled space connected to the sea where you can find lakes, grassy knolls and play areas. Diagonal Mar is a modern park dominated by open spaces, sculptures formed by metal structures and sinuous concrete benches that evoke the waves of the sea. But it is also an area of exuberant plant life that is home to ducks, geese and other aquatic birds.

Why visit Diagonal Mar Park?

Diagonal Mar Park, designed by the architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, is a public park located in the new district of Diagonal Mar i el Front Marítim del Poblenou, which was built from 1999 to 2002. The land occupied by the park belonged to a metalwork and railway material construction company, the only remnant of which is a water tower that bears the name of the river Besòs.

The park features two duck ponds and a lake, in addition to giant slides running down a grass-covered hill. In fact, Diagonal Mar Park’s various play areas include football pitches, basketball courts, pétanque "terrains" and table tennis tables and a number of children’s areas. As far as nature is concerned, the park is home to 51 species of trees, including a 150-year-old Canary Islands dragon tree.

For the most curious of you

  • Did you know? The park’s benches, which are in the form of waves, are called "lungomare", which is Italian for seaside promenade.
  • Local’s tip: Given that it may be too far from the city centre to warrant a specific trip, if you go to the Blue Museum and you have kids, then you should also take them to Diagonal Mar Park so they can enjoy its impressive giant slides!
  • A must: To rest, enjoy the slides or play football, basketball, table tennis…
