This stop is located at the confluence of Passeig de Gràcia and Avinguda Diagonal, an area replete with Modernista and Gothic-inspired houses and palaces.
The convergence of Passeig de Gràcia and Avinguda Diagonal
The Passeig de Gràcia – La Pedrera stop of the Red Route of Barcelona Bus Turístic is outside La Pedrera, Antoni Gaudí’s majestic aesthetic and architectural prodigy, which dominates the top section of Passeig de Gràcia.
Palau Robert, a Neoclassical building with a garden, presides over the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Avinguda Diagonal, along which you can find Casa de les Punxes, a building designed by Puig i Cadafalch to look like a Gothic castle, the Palau del Baró de Quadras, which Puig i Cadafalch decided to reorient to Avinguda Diagonal due to the growing influence of this commercial street, and Casa Pérez-Samanillo.
What to see
- Passeig de Gràcia
An avenue that has been the Catalan bourgeoisie’s showcase since the late 19th century, on which everything is art: its Modernista buildings, it benches and lampposts, even the very ground itself.
- La Pedrera
Casa Milà, more popularly known as La Pedrera, Catalan for ‘stone quarry’, due to its exterior similarity to one, was the last civil engineering project undertaken by the architect Antoni Gaudí before exclusively working on the Sagrada Família. It is a sight not to be missed.
- Casa de les Punxes
The Casa de les Punxes, or Casa Terradas, located on the Modernist route, was declared a historic monument of national interest in 1975. From 2016 to 2020, it housed a museum that was open to the public to disseminate the work and the figure of its architect, Josep Lluís i Cadafalch.
- Palau del Baró de Quadras
Avinguda Diagonal is home to a Gothic-inspired building that has a facade on Carrer del Rosselló decorated in the Modernista style.
- Rambla de Catalunya
Rambla de Catalunya is one of Barcelona’s most welcoming streets. Even though it is a natural prolongation of La Rambla, it actually starts at Plaça de Catalunya and ends at Avinguda Diagonal.
- Eixample Block Interiors
Public spaces designed by Cerdà to be gardens where residents could socialise which have been progressively recovered.
- Shopping
In Barcelona’s shopping areas you can find traditional establishments alongside designer and luxury boutiques, craft shops and gourmet product stores. Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya and Avinguda Diagonal, the Old Town and Gràcia offer some of the best shopping areas.
- Círculo Ecuestre / Casa Pérez Samanillo
At the junction of Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer de Balmes there is a house with a very special history and a very special window.
- Palau Robert
On the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Avinguda Diagonal there is a building with intense green gardens. It is Palau Robert, which was built from 1898 to 1903. It was the private residence of the Marquis of Robert, who was an aristocrat, financier and politician.
- Palau Macaya
On Passeig de Sant Joan there is a Modernista palace decorated with white stucco and stone sculptures. It is Palau Macaya, also called Casa Macaya.
- Gaudí
As one of the greatest exponents of Modernista architecture, Gaudí was responsible for many of the city’s most emblematic buildings.
- Avinguda Diagonal
Avinguda Diagonal has evolved in tandem with the city’s transformation to eventually cross it from one side to the other.
- Casa Fuster
One of Barcelona’s most discrete and elegant Modernista houses is located at the end of Passeig de Gràcia. This last project undertaken by Domènech i Montaner in Barcelona features the architect’s characteristic elements, such as floral ornamentation and trefoil windows.
- Gràcia. Squares
A district with the soul of a town whose charisma has been forged predominantly in its squares, the true centres of social life and entertainment for its residents.
- Gràcia. Boutiques
A stroll through the Gràcia district reveals a large number of small, charismatic shops and boutiques that combine tradition and innovation. Fashion, design, craftwork and food make up the majority of the offering of a district where shopping is a relaxed and pleasant affair.
