Poblenou stop
Poblenou is a neighborhood that, following the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, transitioned from concentrating the majority of the industrial activity in 19th-century Barcelona to hosting tech companies, corporate headquarters, universities, and artistic creation spaces.
A chameleon and innovative neighborhood
The Red Route of the Barcelona Bus Turístic, which runs along the city's coastal line, takes you to a neighborhood marked by the transformation of its industrial past, where creativity is the norm.
Poblenou was the area with the highest industrial density in the country in the 19th century, but the process of deindustrialization in the 1960s, the 1992 Olympics, and, in the 21st century, an ambitious urban transformation plan, 22@, have turned it into a district where large protected industrial complexes have been converted into spaces for technological and artistic innovation, like Palo Alto, or university headquarters.
The Poblenou neighborhood is full of small traditional shops and new design establishments, and is washed by some of the calmest beaches in Barcelona.
The main artery of the district remains Rambla del Poblenou, a one-kilometer-long promenade, a regular gathering place for locals and the center of the gastronomic offer of a neighborhood that connects with the Eixample at the Plaça de les Glòries, where we find two key works of modern architecture in Barcelona: the skyscraper Torre Glòries and the spectacular Disseny HUB - Museu del Disseny de Barcelona, which combines aesthetics and sustainability.
What to see
- 22@ Barcelona – Industrial Heritage
The 22@ project converted part of Barcelona’s industrial past into technological innovation spaces and transformed some of the city’s most important sites into industrial heritage.
- El Poblenou
The district once referred to as ‘Catalan Manchester’ has given way to an open, quiet seaside district that fosters innovation and creativity.
- Rambla del Poblenou
The most prominent street in the Poblenou district, around which the district’s social and commercial life is organised. Rambla del Poblenou, with its bars, shops and emblematic establishments, is the main meeting place for the residents of the district.
- Torre Glòries
This skyscraper instantly became one of Barcelona’s icons upon its inauguration in 2005. Torre Glòries, which was built with strict adherence to energy efficiency criteria, lights up every night, projecting its colours over the city.
- Disseny Hub – Design Museum of Barcelona
With spectacular sustainable architecture, the new design centre is a key element in the new configuration of Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes.
